There are functional end-to-end tests: a script that drives the browser and uses the app as a real user. But what about visual appearance? Image diffing handles that by locking the web app to a consistent appearance. But what about unexpected issues that might crop up, like an overflowing label? There is now a new technique: asking an AI system to analyze an app screenshot to see if there are potential issues.
Modern AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot and Cursor promise easy test automation; just prompt the assistant to write a test, and watch it work. I found the day-to-day experience much different. In this talk, I will show which tasks AI is suitable for, how to collect relevant context for each prompt, and how to guide the AI to code better end-to-end tests.
