In previous lives he was Director of Features Engineering at the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia), was a "planet taker" for Automattic (WordPress) architected the 3rd largest social network in the US (Tagged), and developed the largest revenue-generating product for Plaxo (now Comcast), among other war stories.

It's been a useful application of data science to the consumer-facing web since the early days of the internet. This talk explains how one was built to recommend colleges to prospective high school students, the application of popularity tables and collaborative filters, as well as other approaches and the reasons for doing them.
