Concurrent PHPUnit: 9 Minutes to 19 Seconds
Time- and IO-bound tests are a common reason PHPUnit suites get slow: every test that sleeps, waits on a database, or calls an external service runs sequentially. This talk introduces Counit, an open-source library that runs those tests concurrently in one PHP process using Swoole coroutines. We'll show a suite drop from over 9 minutes to 19 seconds, and cover the tradeoffs: benefits, risks, and how to adopt it incrementally.

Demin is a staff engineer at Electronic Arts (EA), working with cloud-native PHP, NoSQL, and infrastructure as code, with AI part of the stack. He builds backend microservices and libraries for mobile games. His career spans startups to some of the Bay Area's largest corporations, including eBay, Visa, and EA. He maintains 10+ open-source projects and contributes to PECL. He's also part of the Swoole team and speaks about PHP at conferences.
